Waikato River Salvage
Location : Waikato River | Date: September 2009
In 2009 Environment Waikato engaged Total Marine Services to decommission the floating dock on the Waikato River. The floating dock was previously utilised by the paddle steamer MV Waipa Delta which was to be relocated to Auckland.
With restricted access along the Waikato River the floating dock had to be towed approximately 12km from its mooring in central Hamilton to Horotiu where it could be hauled out of the water.
Total Marine Services were able to transport the tug Kaipara and pusher tug Buka (hired from Herons Construction) from Auckland to Hamilton to carry out the job.
The shallow water and unpredictable current within the Waikato River posed some challengers when navigating through the many bends in the river and underneath the number of bridges that cross the river.
With the current of the river flowing at 5-8 knots it was decided to allow the floating dock to drift down the river on its own accord and maneuver and steer the dock with the two tugs.
The floating dock was successfully lifted out of the river at Horotiu and the MV Waipa Delta is now berth alongside Princess Wharf in Auckland.
